I was surfing on the vast land of social media one day. I noticed the excited postings of the debut of pumpkin flavored coffee from a nationally known coffee shop. In fact there were some 1.5k people excited about this! (Don’t get me wrong I love pumpkin scented candles.) I am guessing you can tell I am not a coffee drinker. lol. But reading this made me wonder why are we so excited about pumpkin coffee? I know, I know don’t knock til you try it. But it did get me to think about this excitement, however, where is our excitement about church, the scriptures and yes, Jesus?
In reading the account of Bartimaeus in the book of Mark. Bartimaeus was blind, sitting on the side of the road begging. Hearing of Jesus’ entry into town, Bartimaeus cried out with excitement for the mercy of Jesus. The failed attempts to silence him only proved to increase his excited pleas for the mercy of Jesus. His excitement definitely caught the ear of Jesus! The urging by Jesus to Bartimaeus to Come! Now the part I truly love… Bartimaeus throws off his cloak! Throwing off that which has held him back, throwing off the old Bartimaeus and blindly moving (jumping in fact) to the source of his excitement -Jesus! I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this! He was very specific of what he wanted from Jesus. He wanted to see! Jesus tells him that his faith has healed him. From there he receives his sight and follows Jesus! #ButGod.
Don’t get me wrong I am not suggesting that you shouldn’t get excited about your pumpkin spiced coffee, please go get your fix! (In fact, I get a little envious of coffee drinkers. I feel like there is a part of life that I am missing out on). What I am encouraging you to do is to think about the moments that we can get excited about our relationship with Jesus, about Wednesday night Bible Study, Church on Sunday. Do we speak of these things with as much wide-eyed excitement of our heavenly Father? Let us be like Bartimaeus excited about encountering Jesus, throwing off our old selves and seeing life as if for the first time! How exciting for Bartimaeus! Bartimaeus had a #ButGod experience!
Love this! When I see us getting excited over a Cardinals game, I always think let’s be that excited for what God has done for us!
I know the things that take us to our feet with excitement is an interesting comparison to what jesus does in our life. The Holy Spirit has a way of reminding us
