Throughout the Word you will find countless scriptures of encouraging and even mandating a time of singing to the Lord. It caused me to think about why is God so specific in telling us to SING unto the Lord. We can certainly praise and worship Him with spoken Word but why sing? In the previous blog, we looked at how God will sing over us. What a beautiful time with our Savior! He sings over us with such a deep love that we can’t even fathom its depths, but what happens when we sing to him? So let’s begin to delve in and find out why singing is one of the best things we can do in our relationship with Christ.

The first truth is singing causes us to obey. Oh no, not that word! Yes there it is – Obey! Singing causes us to fall into alignment with the word of God. We are instructed to sing! There is no if you feel like, if you’re in the mood or even the ” that’s what we do before the preaching.” We sing because that is what we are instructed to do.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16. He is instructing us to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs so that we can keep our focus on Him. He even tells us to so with thankfulness in our hearts. He gives us the perspective that we need to have while we sing – thankfulness. Oh what songs we can sing with we lift His name with a thankful heart!

In Ephesians 5:18-19 says “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart…” Oh how thankful I am for the Spirit of God that causes us to sing songs and making melody to the Lord. Again, another example of how God instructs us to sing songs, hymns and make a melody to the Lord. There is something about taking that step of opening our mouth to let our Savior know how we feel about Him.

God’s people are more than invited to sing; we are commanded to sing.

‘And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love’. 2 John 1:6

There is no deeper kind of love then the love we have for our heavenly Father. So today take the step to sing a song of your love for Him. Singing to the Lord is an act of obedience, but greater than that, singing is a great act of love!

Father, help me to sing a song to you because of my love for you. I pray that I step into obedience so that I can sing with boldness of my love for you.
